Did you know that 276 lost their lives to drowning in Australia last year?

As we head into warmer weather let’s work together to keep our children safe. Please make sure you actively supervise your children at the Centre. That means being in the water with them if they are under 5 or weak swimmers. For older children please watch them at all times and avoid distractions such as mobile phones.

Below are prevention strategies of drowning from Royal Life Saving:

  • Active supervision by parents or carers of children
  • Be aware of pre-existing medical conditions and physical limitations
  • Understand the possible adverse effects of medications
  • Follow safety rules displayed around the pool area
  • Follow directions issued by staff and lifeguards
  • Inform a lifeguard if a non-swimmer, or of any relevant medical conditions
  • Learn swimming and water safety skills (find out about our BlueFit Swimming program here)

Being in Australia we are surrounded by water wherever we go. By exposing children to water and swimming at an early age it will help prepare them for a life of fun activities such as pool parties, beach holidays, surfing, etc. With this being the case, we’ve found the top 5 benefits of learning to swim at a young age:

Life and life-saving skill:

To feel comfortable in the water and being able to swim is a life skill that will give you confidence and increase your water safety. Hopefully, you’ll never find yourself in a situation but if the time comes you’ll feel confident enough to hold your head above water and help those around you to do the same.

Physical benefits:

If you’re looking for a fun workout, you cannot beat swimming. Swimming is a full-body workout that engages your legs, upper body, core, lats and triceps. Although it might not seem like it, swimming will use more of your body’s major muscle groups than any other form of cardio.

Social Skills:

Going to swimming lessons or join a local swim club is a great way for children to play, interact and learn to take direction. This can set them up for social skills that will benefit them for life.

Challenging and rewarding:

Swimming offers a workout that can be both challenging and rewarding, whether you’re a new swimmer looking to improve your fitness or a competitive swimmer looking to improve on your personal best it will allow you to improve and feel great with every milestone.

Lifelong Skill:

Swimming is a skill that you are unlikely to forget over time. Similar to riding a bike, you may be out of practice but once you’re in the water it will come back. This is a great skill to have because as you get older, swimming has a very low impact on the body’s joint and can be a form of exercise you can continue to do.

With the warmer weather on its way, it’s important to remind parents how learning to swim is a life skill as drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children aged 0-4yrs old.

Our Adolescent Program is for those older swimmers who are not confident in an aquatic environment through to those swimmers who are wanting to perfect their strokes.

Our program offers the opportunity for adolescents to learn to swim in an environment with their peers and is primarily swimmers aged between 13 – 18 years.

We differentiate the levels between beginner, intermediate and advanced, so everyone has the opportunity to continue to learn and develop no matter their capability!

We are proud to announce that we are hosting, with BlueFit Swimming as a major sponsor, Naomi Findlay’s Swim For School Fundraiser at Lambton Swimming Pool.

They are committed to building 3 United World Schools in Cambodia over the next 3 years! You can choose to register as a team to raise money or donate to one of the swim teams already registered.

As a team of 6 to 10 people, you will complete 22 km swimming within a 50m pool. Individuals can register and will be allocated a team and, there will be a $1200 entry donation required by each team, or $150 entry donation for an individual. There are prizes allocated for the team that finishes first, raises the most money, and finishes last.

They are encouraging all team members to wear your best fancy dress and bring along your cheer squad!

We are very excited to introduce the new BlueFit Swimming program to the Moss Vale community. Students are all booked in to their normal class time and they will attend their first BlueFit lesson greeted by their regular instructor. The BlueFit Swimming program consists of structured levels that progressively build swimming skills and water confidence. It is important to acknowledge that current students may have not yet learned some of the skills that are in their BlueFit Swimming lessons. During the transition we greatly appreciate your understanding that it may take time to teach these new skills.
