THE BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR SENIORS

THE BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR SENIORS cover

Training your body in any way shape or form can have a massive positive influence on our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing, especially as we begin to get older. Embrace these older years and become the fittest version of yourself, it is never too late!

It has been scientifically proven that exercise is the “closest thing we’ve found to magic pill for combating the effects of aging”, according to Dr Linda Field at Columbia University.

A few of the many outstanding benefits of training that backup the research over the years include;

1. Prevents and lowers the risk of many age-related diseases

Regular physical movement and exercise helps to improve overall immunity and prevent many common diseases like diabetes and heart disease which becomes increasingly important for seniors as their immunity becomes compromised. No form of exercise is too little or small, even light and low intensity exercises can be extremely beneficial.

2. Improved Mental Health and Cognition

Exercise helps to keep the brain young and the mental health benefits are infinite. Not only does it produce endorphins and act as a stress reliever, it can help with those who struggle to sleep and suffer from insomnia, as well as reducing the risk of dementia.

3. The Social Aspect

Exercise doesn’t need to be done alone and can often be done in a fun social gathering whether through a fitness class at the local centre/gym, a swimming session or a simple walk with a few friends or family. Making it an enjoyable and sociable experience which helps mental health further for those who may be feeling lonely.

Overall, exercise and training can significantly enhance and improve our quality of life at any age, especially as we get into our later years and can easily be implemented in small ways and lifestyle changes. Try and choose activities you enjoy, join a new class or request a tour of the health club with one of our friendly staff and discuss the program options available for you.
